Land use plan
According to the Land Use Plan of the City of Ostrava (map portal as of 14.8.2020), the area of the Jan Šverma spoil heap is designated as areas with differing uses – landscape greenery, light industry, developable areas number (single-family residential housing).

Status description
Inactive, not reclaimed
Reclamation
No reclamation
Reclamation description
Reclamation has not taken place at the Jan Šverma spoil heap. The spoil heap is overgrown with volunteer (self-seeded) vegetation.

History description
Coal waste rock from the Jan Šverma Mine (formerly the Ignát Mine), where mining took place during the period 1890–1993, was deposited at the spoil heap. Coal of the Hrušov and Petřkovice beds of the Ostrava Formation was mined. The waste rock fill is predominantly affected by intensive thermal processes. In the last century, a large part of the volume of the spoil heap was excavated and used as fill material for the construction of roads (e.g., Rudná Street). More detailed information on the history of the Jan Šverma spoil heap could not be located.
Past waste rock usage
Ano
Usage description
Part of the good-quality burnt-out coal waste rock from the Jan Šverma spoil heap was excavated and used in the construction of road embankments in Ostrava (e.g., Rudná Street in the 1970s and 1980s).

Material composition
Part of the good-quality burnt-out coal waste rock from the Jan Šverma spoil heap was excavated and used in the construction of road embankments in Ostrava (e.g., Rudná Street in the 1970s and 1980s). As part of survey work for the assessment of a proposed construction of a terrain testing polygon for trucks, samples of unburnt coal waste rock were taken in 2012 from the southeastern part of the spoil heap for laboratory testing (Šišková – Šimková 2012). The coal waste rock in this part of the spoil heap contained a high proportion of combustible substances (up to 43.1%). In other parameters, it met all the requirements of ČSN 73 6133 and TP 268.

Thermal activity status
Thermally inactive
Thermal activity description
In the past, intensive thermal activity took place at the Jan Šverma spoil heap. Most of the coal waste rock is burnt-out. Based on X-ray diffraction analysis, the maximum temperatures during the thermal alteration of the rocks are estimated at 700°C (Biskupová 2018). During the inspection in August 2020, no signs of thermal processes were observed. The resumption of thermal activity in the part with burnt-out coal waste rock is unlikely. The southeastern part of the spoil heap, with unburnt coal waste rock having high contents of combustible substances, is the risk area. We recommend verifying, in the next stage, the spatial extent of the occurrence of burnt-out and unburnt coal waste rock at the spoil heap. In the part with unburnt coal waste rock, we recommend thermal monitoring.

Recommendations - testing
In the next stage of work, we recommend carrying out laboratory tests of samples of burnt-out coal waste rock and verifying its physical-mechanical properties. We also recommend verifying the spatial extent of burnt-out and unburnt coal waste rock at the spoil heap.
Recommendations - monitoring
A one-time (single) stage of thermal monitoring using aerial imaging/surveying is recommended.
Remediation proposal
For the time being, only thermal monitoring is proposed.
