- Land use plan
- According to the Land Use Plan of the City of Ostrava (map portal as of 14.8.2020), the area of the Trojice spoil heap is designated as areas with differing uses, industrial waste dump – reclamation, forest. The Trojice spoil heap is part of the territorial system of ecological stability, local biocorridor 112. For further use of the area, decontamination is required, which had already been planned in 2018 but has not yet been carried out.

- Heap status
- Inactive
- Status description
- Inactive, partially reclaimed
- Reclamation
- Partially reclaimed
- Reclamation description
- In the past, tree planting was carried out at the Trojice spoil heap, which is currently supplemented by volunteer (self-seeded) vegetation.
- History description
- Coal mining in the Trojice Valley had a long history. The Trojice Mine was established in 1844, and a coking plant was also built there in 1848. Coal mining at the Trojice Mine continued until 1967, and during the period 1969–1974 the shafts were backfilled. The spoil heap of the Trojice Mine was established in 1910 and was operated until 1960. Morphologically, it is a ridge-type spoil heap. The Trojice spoil heap represents an old mining waste deposit site with an area of approximately 8 ha, where, in addition to mine waste rock, waste from the coking plant was also deposited. It is located on the slope of the Trojice Valley (the valley of the Burňa stream). It directly adjoins the Ema mining waste deposit site, located to its north. In the past, galleries (adits) of early coal extraction emerged here. The Trojice Valley represents a 1200 m long depression, along whose axis flows the Burňa stream, which empties into the Ostravice River (below Bohumínská Street). The axis of the valley is oriented roughly from northeast to southwest. The original bottom of the valley, and thus also the bed of the Burňa stream, lies below the level of the surface of the spoil heap and is piped (channeled underground). The piping of the Burňa stream runs through the site of the former Trojice coking plant and ends in the northwestern extension of the Trojice coking plant site. There, the stream emerges to the surface below the retaining wall above Těšínská Street and forms an extensive wetland. The stream is then led below the level of the street and piped again.
- Material composition
- The Trojice spoil heap consists of unburnt coal waste rock with fragment sizes up to 200 mm. Currently, fragments of coal waste rock are exposed at the surface only sporadically. In the past, no laboratory tests were carried out to verify the physical-mechanical properties of the coal waste rock at the Trojice spoil heap. At the Trojice Mine, the highest-quality coking coal of the Poruba and Jaklovec beds was mined. Fragments of coal do not occur on the surface of the spoil heap.
- Thermal activity status
- Potentially thermally active
- Thermal activity description
- Potentially thermally active to inactive. Spontaneous combustion and a subsequent fire evidently occurred at the Trojice spoil heap owing to the high content of combustible substances in the waste rock. The Trojice spoil heap was remediated in 1977. The remediation technology chosen was the method of areal trenching (furrowing) of the heap's surface. A suspension of power-plant fly ash and water was flushed into the excavated trenches. In this way, a sealing barrier was created against the spread of the fire to the neighboring Ema spoil heap. Currently, no manifestations of thermal activity have been recorded at the Trojice spoil heap. When carrying out any interventions in the spoil heap (e.g., in connection with its reclamation), thermal monitoring is essential. The area of interest is heavily contaminated, primarily as a result of the coking plant's activity. The main pollutants are PAHs, NEL (non-polar extractable substances/mineral oil hydrocarbons), C10–C40 hydrocarbons, and lead. The contamination affects not only the fill material (coal waste rock and construction/demolition waste) but also the underlying soils to a depth of 1–2 m, and locally up to 5 m. Groundwater is also contaminated (PAHs, NEL, BTEX, ammonium ions) (Šišková 2014).
- Recommendations - testing
- Basic tests of coal waste rock are recommended, including determination of loss on ignition.
- Recommendations - monitoring
- A one-time (single) stage of thermal monitoring using aerial imaging/surveying is recommended.
