Status description
Inactive, partially reclaimed
Reclamation
Partially reclaimed
Reclamation description
During the period 1991–1992, technical and agricultural reclamation of the spoil heap took place. The crown of the spoil heap was covered with a soil layer approximately 1 m thick; service roads, infiltration pits, and drainage ditches were built there. The Václav spoil heap is currently afforested. Currently, the body of the spoil heap is freely accessible.

History description
The Václav spoil heap was used for depositing Carboniferous waste rock from the opening-up, development, and reconstruction works of the Václav Mine, which ceased operations in 1968. The spoil heap has an area of 14.6 ha. The body of the spoil heap consists of burnt-out Carboniferous rocks, which were in the past partly extracted and used as reclamation material.
Past waste rock usage
Ano
Usage description
Burnt-out coal waste rock was mined/extracted at the Václav spoil heap in the past for reclamation purposes.

Material composition
The waste rock fill at the Václav spoil heap was strongly affected by thermal processes in the past. A considerable part of it is burnt-out. The extent of burnt-out and unburnt coal waste rock fill at the Václav spoil heap has not been determined. Burnt-out coal waste rock has been mined/extracted at the Václav spoil heap in the past for reclamation purposes. Unfortunately, no laboratory tests of the physical-mechanical properties of the waste rock have been carried out here.

Thermal activity status
Potentially thermally active
Thermal activity description
Thermal measurements were carried out at the Václav spoil heap during the years 1992–1995. The results of these measurements demonstrated a tendency toward a decrease in the thermal activity of the spoil heap following its previous ignition/fire.
Thermal monitoring
Ano
Monitoring description
During orientation/preliminary temperature monitoring in 2010, temperatures of 22.6–26.2°C were found at a depth of 1 m below the ground surface, which indicates a subsiding thermal process. Non-zero values of carbon monoxide content (30–430 ppm) were also found (Kresta – Hájovský 2011). No manifestations of thermal activity were found at the Václav spoil heap at the time of the reconnaissance survey (11.8.2020). Given the past thermal phenomena, it can be assumed that they have significantly subsided; however, subsiding thermal activity in the interior, deeper below the surface, cannot be ruled out. As part of the next stage of work, we recommend carrying out one round of thermal monitoring at the site.

Recommendations - testing
Basic tests of coal waste rock are recommended, including determination of loss on ignition.
Recommendations - monitoring
A one-time (single) stage of thermal monitoring using aerial imaging/surveying is recommended.
Remediation proposal
Remediation of the Václav spoil heap was carried out in the 1990s.
