Land use plan
According to the Land Use Plan of the Town of Orlová (11.6.2020), the area of the Žofie spoil heap is designated as areas for production and storage – light industry, and for production and storage – heavy industry and energy.

Status description
Inactive, partially reclaimed
Reclamation
Partially reclaimed
Reclamation description
The Žofie spoil heap was partially reclaimed as part of the construction of Slezská Street. The mine spoil heap is integrated into the urban landscape, overgrown with extensive vegetation. There is no negative impact of the spoil heap on the surrounding environment here. In the past, smaller foci of thermal processes were remediated.

History description
The Žofie spoil heap has a very long history. It is likely that the first deposits were laid down here as early as 1871 as a spoil heap for rock from the sinking of two shafts of the Žofie plant, and later for waste rock from opening-up and development workings. In 1960, a fire arose at the spoil heap. The date on which the deposition of coal waste rock at the spoil heap ended is not precisely known. In 1992, biological reclamation was carried out, and the Žofie spoil heap was integrated into the surrounding landscape. Currently, the site is unused; the low slopes are not maintained and are difficult to traverse. The spoil heap is freely accessible, and there is no permanently inhabited structure located here; to the west, the inhabited Halfarova Colony is adjacent.

Material composition
The coal waste rock deposited at the Žofie spoil heap was, for the most part, not affected by thermal activity. The grain size of the unburnt coal waste rock at the spoil heap reaches up to 200 mm. Coal waste rock was not mined/extracted at the Žofie spoil heap in the past, and no laboratory tests of the physical-mechanical properties of the waste rock have been carried out here.

Thermal activity status
Potentially thermally active
Thermal activity description
A specific feature of the site is its relatively long history and the long period during which the spoil heap has remained quiescent as a natural part of the surrounding environment. In 1960, an endogenous fire occurred at the Žofie spoil heap, which was extinguished and the surface remediated by insulating overlayering. The concentration of CO, as a basic indicator of the incomplete combustion process, reached values of up to 116 ppm during measurements in 2010. Thermal measurements in 2010 showed a normal temperature (14.2–17.8°C) at a depth of 1 m below the ground surface, which corresponds to normal background temperature. Despite the higher content of combustible substances in the coal waste rock (20.54–23.12%), the risk of the development of thermal activity is low (Kresta – Hájovský 2011). No manifestations of thermal activity were found at the Žofie spoil heap in August 2020.

Monitoring description
Thermal measurements in 2010 showed a normal temperature (14.2–17.8°C) at a depth of 1 m below the ground surface, which corresponds to normal background temperature. Despite the higher content of combustible substances in the coal waste rock (20.54–23.12%), the risk of the development of thermal activity is low (Kresta – Hájovský 2011). No manifestations of thermal activity were found at the Žofie spoil heap in August 2020. As part of the next stage of work, we recommend carrying out one round of thermal monitoring at the site.

Recommendations - testing
Basic tests of coal waste rock are recommended, including determination of loss on ignition.
Recommendations - monitoring
A one-time (single) stage of thermal monitoring using aerial imaging/surveying is recommended.
Remediation proposal
Remediation of the Žofie spoil heap was carried out in the past.
