Land use plan
According to the Land Use Plan of the City of Ostrava (map portal as of 14 August 2020), the area of the Alexander spoil heap (dump) is designated as areas with a different manner of use — light industry, and areas with a different manner of use — protective greenery, areas with a different manner of use (landscape greenery, forests).

Transport technology
By mine wagons over a bridge onto the heap or to the tipping (loading/hopper) station.

Heap status

Reclamation
No reclamation
Reclamation description
The heap was mined/excavated in the past and was not subsequently reclaimed. It is covered with dense vegetation. Practically the entire heap is impassable.

History description
Coal waste rock from the operation of the Alexander Mine was deposited on the Alexander heap during the period 1920–1988. The waste rock was transported from the mine to the heap by mine wagons over a bridge and tipped onto the heap by a tank tippler (rotary tippler). The waste rock deposited on the heap came partly from the processing (preparation) plant, and partly consisted of Carboniferous rock mined from preparatory mine workings driven through the entire profile outside the coal-bearing section. According to available sources, only a screening/sorting plant (třídírna) operated at the Alexander Mine until the 1950s. New processing equipment was then installed in the old building. The processing plant included a screening plant, a coal washery ("prádlo"), a wagon circuit, a stone-processing facility, a stone heap, sludge/settling ponds, and a works siding (railway spur). The heap area was not reclaimed after the Alexander Mine ceased operation. Part of the heap was excavated/removed for the construction of road II/477. The current condition of the area of interest generally corresponds to that of abandoned land.
Past waste rock usage
Ano
Usage description
Coal waste rock from the Alexander heap was used in the 1980s as fill material during the construction of road II/477 (Frýdecká Street). The heap contains unburnt coal waste rock with fragment sizes up to 250 mm. In the past, no laboratory tests were carried out on samples of coal waste rock from the Alexander heap to verify their physical-mechanical properties.

Material composition
laboratorní zkoušky pro ověření jejich fyzikálně-mechanických vlastností. Waste rock from development work, drivage, tunnelling and processing/preparation plants — [need to] state the specific mine from which the coal waste rock was deposited, and add the proportion of the main rock components, or the content of coal matter or combustible substances (and by what methodology this was determined). The heap contains unburnt coal waste rock with fragment sizes up to 250 mm. In the past, no laboratory tests were carried out on samples of coal waste rock from the Alexander heap to verify their physical-mechanical properties.

Thermal activity status
Thermally inactive
Thermal activity description
In the 1980s, when the Alexander heap was opened up and aerated during the extraction of waste rock for the construction of road II/477, spontaneous heating (smouldering) occurred. The heating was localized and was extinguished using water and by covering it with a layer of fly ash from the Vítkovice Ironworks disposal site. The concentration of CO, as the primary indicator of the incomplete combustion process, was found to be minimal during atmospheric screening in 2010 (max. 3 ppm). Despite the higher content of combustible substances (19.22%), a low degree of risk of endogenous thermal processes can be assumed (Kresta – Hájovský 2011). No signs of thermal activity were detected on the Alexander heap as of 08/2020.

Recommendations - testing
Doporučují se základní zkoušky uhelné hlušiny, včetně stanovení ztráty žíháním . We recommend basic tests of the coal waste rock, including determination of loss on ignition.
Recommendations - monitoring
We recommend a single round of thermal monitoring using aerial (thermal) imaging/photography.
Remediation proposal
Recommendation of a suitable procedure for remediation of the thermal process with regard to the specific conditions of the heap. For now, only thermal monitoring is proposed.
