- Land use plan
- According to the Land Use Plan of the City of Ostrava (map portal as of 14 August 2020), the area of the Eduard Urx heap is designated as areas with a different manner of use — leisure/recreation, developable areas (areas designated for development). The current use and anticipated afforestation of the heap correspond to the Land Use Plan. The heap is integrated into the landscape and covered with vegetation. It is in the immediate vicinity of the Mining Museum – Landek Park complex, which includes, among other things, sports and recreational facilities.

- Heap status
- Inactive
- Status description
- Inactive, reclaimed
- Reclamation
- Partially reclaimed
- Reclamation description
- Reclamation works were carried out at the site between 2019 and 2024. The spoil heap has been afforested and grassed over, and is freely accessible to the public.
- History description
- This is an old complex of heaps for depositing waste rock from the opening-up works of the now-closed Anselm Mine and from the processing plant of the Eduard Urx Mine, which operated in the period 1925–1950. The heap has the shape of a ridge-like cone and is currently overgrown with self-seeded (volunteer) woody vegetation, with a smaller part in the west covered with grass. The heap is located in the former meander of the Odra River. However, following the relocation (diversion) of the Odra River, terrain modifications took place in the immediate vicinity of the existing heap (infilling of the old riverbed of the Odra). Part of the riverbed was used as a municipal waste landfill.
- Material composition
- Waste rock from development work, drivage/tunnelling and processing plants — [need to] state the specific mine from which the coal waste rock was deposited, and add the proportion of the main rock components, or the content of coal matter or combustible substances (and by what methodology this was determined). The heap consists of Carboniferous rocks from development and opening-up works, with a variable content of residual coal matter. It is assumed that it also contains a minor proportion of other materials of a construction-waste character. The coal waste rock deposited on the Eduard Urx heap was not affected by thermal activity. The grain size of the unburnt coal waste rock on the heap reaches up to 150 mm. Coal waste rock has not been mined/extracted at the Eduard Urx heap in the past, and no laboratory tests of the physical-mechanical properties of the waste rock have been carried out there.
- Thermal activity status
- Thermally inactive
- Thermal activity description
- Projevy termické aktivity na odvale Eduard Urx nebyly v srpnu 2020 zjištěny. No thermal activity has been observed on the Eduard Urx heap throughout its existence. Atmogeochemical measurements in 2010 showed measurable carbon monoxide (CO) content values in four out of 12 probes, in the range of 5–28 ppm. Thermal measurements in 2010 showed a temperature of 14.5–16.9°C at a depth of 1 m below the surface, which corresponds to the normal temperature background. Despite the elevated content of combustible substances in the coal waste rock (up to 23.32%), the risk of thermal activity developing is low. No signs of thermal activity were detected on the Eduard Urx heap in August 2020.
- Recommendations - testing
- We recommend basic tests of the coal waste rock, including determination of loss on ignition.
- Recommendations - monitoring
- We recommend a single round of thermal monitoring using aerial (thermal) imaging/photography.
- Remediation proposal
- Recommendation of a suitable procedure for remediation of the thermal process with regard to the specific conditions of the heap. For now, only thermal monitoring is proposed.
